GWR design, BR built Siphon G 1019 was withdrawn in 1983 and had been located at the Gloucestershire-Warwickshire Railway and Llangollen Railway before moving to Swindon, It is now located at Llynclys Railway Centre Shropshire. The 1972 edition of 'The Coaching Stock of British Railways' listed 132 GWR design Gangwayed Milk Vans, more commonly referred to by the GWR designation of 'Siphon G'.
These included examples from six different lots built to two different diagrams between 1936 and 1955. A total of 175 were built in this period and all are included. Initially built for conveying churned milk, many subsequently saw other uses. All were through steam piped when built but those modified for use as Newspaper Vans were fitted with steam heating.
Llynclys Railway Centre is the home of GWR W1019, and where the restoration work will take place, currently, ownership is in the process and being handed over from Cambrian heritage Railways to two new owners who are both volunteers at Llynclys Railway Centre.
We are looking for new volunteers to come on board to help restore the Van and eventually repaint into 'Blue 'Newspapers' livery, no experience required as we will learn new woodwork skills and learn about restoration of railway rolling stock, if you are interested in taking part, then please drop us an email so arrangements can be made for you to come and have a look round.
